Acer Aspire One

Paola recently bought the Acer Aspire One.

It’s running Linpus Linux Lite, an obscure distro based on Fedora8. It has a custom user interface, but underneath it’s XFCE. The machine’s hardware is:

  • Intel Atom N270 @ 1.6 GHz + 512 MB RAM
  • The SouthBridge is an Intel ICH7 (82801G)
  • Graphics is an Intel 945GM [8086:27ae]
  • Sound is an Intel HDA [8086:27d8]
  • Ethernet is a Realtek RTL8102E [10ec:8136]
  • WiFi is an Atheros AR5006EG [168c:001c]
  • The webcam is an Acer Crystal Eye [064e:d101] on the USB

Some tricks:

  • To open a terminal quickly, Alt+F2 and type terminal
  • Following this guide you can install a little panel tool that lets you switch between the “Easy” and “Advanced” (default XFCE) environment …
  • To install Pidgin, first remove libpurple.
  • I haven’t yet found a way to upgrade to Firefox 3…
  • Afterwards, it’s worth installing GIMP & Transmission with yum.
  • With iDesk you can add icons to the XFCE desktop
