Internet time

with one comment

On sunday (28/10) my ubuntu laptop did not change to winter time. I checked and saw that I had not set the time zone (blank), so I did. Still no update, probably because it’s set to synchronize with internet time servers. However, the next morning and after being online for almost 2 hours it still had not updated the time, so I did some research and found out that the “synchronize now” button is only enabled when in manual mode. So I switched to manual, synchronized and then switched back to “keep synchronized blah blah”.

  1. you can avoid all this by running ntpdate. I choose:
    sudo ntpdate -u
-u forces ntpdate to use an unpriviledged port for the query; without it i get the error “the NTP socket is in use, exiting”
