Google Calendar in Thunderbird

with 2 comments

I’ve recently played around with the idea of turning Thunderbird from my “Outlook Express” to my full-featured “Outlook”.

I’ve found 3 possible ways to import my Google Calendars into Thunderbird’s Lightning addon (sorted by complexity):

  1. directly, through each GCal’s iCal (.ics) link
  2. using the Provider for Google Calendar addon, then giving it the XML link of the GCal
  3. using the full-featured GCALDaemon, which allows also GMail contacts synchronization and other goodies…

Obviously i chose the 1st option for simplicity.

  1. Google released Google Calendar Sync to synchronize with Microsoft Outlook’s calendar.

  2. Another option is to use sunbird, mozilla’s stand-alone calendar application (instead of lightning, which works inside thunderbird). It too allows you to subscribe to ics calendars, but does not cache them for offline viewing/editing…
