rar “…is a proprietary file format for data compression and archiving…”, so i am not really in favor of it. however, i recently downloaded a .rar archive and was unable to open it, so using aptitude search i found two packages:  unrar (non-free) and unrar-free (Can’t handle some archives in the RAR 3.0 format). However the free one does not integrate well with file-roller, so i had to use the non-free one. There is a request for this integration on ubuntu brainstorm
