looking at my bootchart, readahead is responsible for approx 10 of the 26 seconds it takes my laptop to boot. to verify its usefulness, I removed it, and my boot time increased by 10 seconds, so now it’s back

the list of files it loads to page cache is in /etc/readahead/boot, which (in my case) contains 710 items. to get a total size, use the command du -c `cat /etc/readahead/boot`

Update 02.04.2010: Lucid uses ureadahead, the “über-readahead daemon”. Things here are more complicated, as the list of files to read are in the binary file /var/lib/ureadahead/pack. You can run sudo ureadahead –dump
