Removed some users and groups that seemed irrelevant yesterday, and today I was getting the following error when trying to install packages:

dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting:
syntax error: unknown group ‘Debian-exim’ in statoverride file

I fixed it by removing the file /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride

Update 31.08:

Actually, the lack of the above file caused dpkg to think there are dependency problems:

/usr/sbin/dpkg-statoverride: cannot open statoverride: No such file or directory

so I created an empty one (sudo touch /var/lib/dpkg/statoverride) and the issue went away…
