I knew how to use autotools (./configure, make, sudo make install), but never really had the time to understand how everything works under the hood and how to tweak it. So here I go:

./bootstrap will (usually) do 5 things for you:

  1. aclocal will read and generate aclocal.m4
  2. autoconf will read and generate configure
  3. autoheader will read and generate
  4. libtoolize ???
  5. automake will read and generate

Then ./configure will create the config.h and Makefile
