Ubuntu 10.10 includes Xserver 1.9, which uses the new ABI for video drivers (ABI 8), which makes it incompatible with previous video drivers. The result is that I couldn’t enable compiz with the binary nvidia driver: running compiz –replace would exit with the error Fatal: Software rendering detected

The solution is to tell Xorg to ignore ABI incompatibilities, by adding the following lines in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file (after running sudo nvidia-xconfig):

Section "ServerLayout"
    Identifier "Default Layout"
    InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
    InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
    Option "IgnoreABI" "True"
