pulseaudio muted

My wife’s laptop (eee1005) running Ubuntu 10.10 beta would have the master audio channel muted and lowered to 0 after each reboot, so you’d have to press “unmute” and also raise the volume after each reboot. After lots of searching around, I found the following solutions that do *NOT* work:

  1. remove ~/.pulse and reboot
  2. untick “Audio Settings Management” in System->Administration->Services (doesn’t exist in Maverick)
  3. run “sudo /lib/udev/alsa-utils”
  4. remove ~/.asoundrc
  5. edit /etc/init.d/alsa-utils (doesn’t exist in Maverick)

The solution that *DID* work was to edit /etc/pulse/default.pa and comment-out the line “load-module module-device-restore” (close to the beginning).
